This cask bottling, distilled in February 1988, spent twenty eight years maturing in a refill ex-Sherry hogshead.  It was bottled at cask strength in July of 2016 at 51.3% ABV.  Cask #7403 would have yielded 255 bottles but we offered 105 litres of our cask to the 2016 Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar.  As a result, we're releasing 115 bottles to Single Cask Nation members.

Our tasting notes are as follows:

Color: Dark grapeseed oil

Nose: A laundry list of exotic notes: Fennel seeds, lemon lavender jam, salted Turkish delights, and lemongrass then more traditional notes of freshly cut oak and leather wallets

Palate: Easy entry but peppery towards mid-palate. A myriad of citrusy sweet flavors found in boutique upscale candy stores: Lemon pinwheels, pie crusts, vanilla pudding, now candied fennel seeds, a hint of mint. The advanced age of this whisky is clear but the candy store sweet treats help balance out the experience.

Finish: Medium length with hints of vanilla pudding and candied lemon peels remaining

On the label: An indulgent whisky offering a cornucopia of candy shop goodies and a host of patisserie delights. The oak on the nose and palate hints at age yet the liveliness can not be ignored.

Founded in 1881, Bunnahabhain distillery is one of eight working distilleries on Islay and the only one on that small Hebridean isle to produce predominantly unpeated (neither earthy nor smoky) Scotch whisky. Just up the coast from Diageo's Caol Ila distillery, Bunnahabhain sits on the Port Askaig corner of Islay and is right across the water from the Isle of Jura.
