Kilchoman 4, Bourbon Cask - ARCHIVED$95.00
This cask bottling, distilled in November 2007, was matured in a first fill ex-bourbon barrel. It was bottled at cask strength in July 2012 at 58.4% ABV. Cask #378/07 yielded 245 bottles.
Our tasting notes are as follows:
Color: Pale straw
Nose: Requires a bit of work to appreciate the complexity: leads with kippers and greasy bolts, spent shotgun shells, pine needles, pine tar, violets in a pot of soil, playdoh, dry and grassy, tulasi leaves in honey water with a little toffee
Palate: Oily mouthfeel with coal smoke (with exits through the nose), brine, latex and a little sweetness running up the sides of the tongue
Finish: Long and oily (like Karo syrup), with pepper, burnt driftwood, almond skins in the way back
On the label: A complex mixture of pine tar and spent shotgun shells yet slightly floral. Viscous and briny, earthy yet sweet with puffs of coal smoke and a long, oily finish
Islay's youngest distillery was built in 2006 on the west side of the famous whisky island. Despite its youth, Kilchoman has already enjoyed three full years of very well received releases. Aging in ex-bourbon barrels sourced from Buffalo Trace their peated spirit displays a great mouthfeel and enough smoke and tar to thrill any "peat freak."
