Bruichladdich 9, 1st fill Bourbon Hogshead - ARCHIVED

$105.00
This cask bottling, distilled in June 2006, spent nine years maturing in a first fill ex-Bourbon hogshead.  It was bottled at cask strength in December of 2015 at 56.7% ABV.  Cask #528 yielded, surprisingly, only 153 bottles.

Our tasting notes are as follows:

Color: Bright Gold

Nose: (While it smells exactly like walking into one of Bruichladdich’s many warehouses on Islay that’s not exactly self-explanatory so...) There’s an unmistakeable earthiness at first but with a developing Smarties and gooseberry jam sweetness, notes of warm wood swell up to cut the sweetness

Palate: Very buttery on entry with Asian pears and white peaches but with an earthy, damp peat heaviness underneath, milk chocolate notes transition into the finish

Finish: Moderate length with lingering pepper and some ash

On the label: Like walking into Bruichladdich’s dunnage warehouse, this dram presents a wonderful earthy quality which is complimented by whiffs of peaty malt and balanced by fresh, fruity sweetness

Founded in 1881, Bruichladdich distillery has a long and colored history. Being one of two distilleries on Islay to produce non (or lightly) peated whisky as a standard practice, Bruichladdich, a distillery that was mothballed four times in its history, was re-launched in 2000/2001 by owner Mark Reynier of Murray McDavid. Mr Reynier had the very good sense to bring on board Mr. Jim McEwan (formally of Bowmore fame) as Bruichladdich's master distiller. Once the stills became operational again the distillery began producing 10ppm (peated) Bruichladdich, and soon, 40ppm Port Charlotte, and 80ppm Octomore (which, over the years has gone to as high as 258 ppm!).  In 2012,  Rémy Cointreau purchased the distillery for £58 million, and in 2015 Jim McEwan retired from the distillery and was replaced by his apprentice, Adam Hannett.
