This cask bottling, distilled in March 1974, spent forty six years maturing in a second fill ex-bourbon hogshead. It was bottled at cask strength in September of 2020 at 46.2% ABV. Cask #7844000057 yielded 153 bottles.
Our tasting notes are as follows:
Color: Green flecked reflective gold
Nose: Massive bourbon-like notes off the bat. Think cotton candy, melted caramel, some pencil shavings, and even a little bit of burnt brown sugar. Not-so-subtle notes of chamomile and other summery wild flowers. Candy corn and trail mix (heavy on the milk chocolate), honey roasted nuts, all on a warm and rainy spring day.
Palate: Impeccable mouthfeel: big, rich, and mouth coating. Very floral-forward at first which was to be expected given the nose but it’s the presence of bright lavender that we usually only find on peated Islay whiskies. Most intriguing! Spun sugar, apple porridge, baked plantain… this really is quite lovely. Some more bourbon-like notes make themselves known as we transition to the finish: heavy nuttiness and even a delicate hint of dill
Finish: Long finish. Be on look out for the waves powdered chocolate, baked pears, and brown baking spices.
On the label: Just when we thought we had grain whisky figured out this sample crossed our desk! Rich and almost bourbon-like at first blush but the floral notes take us far outside the grain whisky silo.

Opened in 1960, Invergordon (Whyte & Mackay's five column still grain distillery located north of Inverness but south of Tain) produces approximately 40 million liters of spirit annually. While the vast majority of production is dedicated to supporting the company's eponymous blend they produce a dozen blends worldwide. The Invergordon house style is known for being creamy and vanilla forward.
