A couple weeks back our dear friend and listener of the padcost, Ollie Chilton of Elixir Distillers, told Joshua that he missed hearing good whisky news on our "Extra! Extra!!" episodes. Joshua gave him a challenge: "If you can bring us good whisky news, Ollie, we'll cover it on the padcost!"

Well, Ollie brought some good news and so we decided it was best to have Ollie on the pad to discuss his good news with us.

Joshua and Jason announce the release of the final Online Exclusive bottling of 2025:

A 25 year old Laphroaig from a refill Bourbon Hogshead and the announcement is set to the backdrop of some history of production at the Laphroaig Distillery as well as close to 30 years of Laphroaig drinking experience. That and some serious belly laughs (rabbit, rabbit!).

This dreamboat of Laphroaig, distilled in 1999, that's somehow both fruity and mineral-y at once, launches on Tuesday, December 9 at Noon EST on singlecasknation.com. It's a special, special Laphroaig, nae doot!

A few episodes ago Jason asked Joshua if there were any distilleries of note in his home state of Connecticut (the pizza capitol of the world) and Joshua named just a few, one of them being Powdermen Spirits Co.

Located in Simsbury CT, Vince Lucca is producing delicious (and award winning) bourbon at Powdermen Spirits Co. and he's doing it in a way that's very unique; in a way that may have some hesitate or -- gasp -- say nay!

Listen up nay sayers (and neigh sayers!), you need to listen to Joshua's conversation with Vince and hear and learn about his process because it's unlike anything you may have heard of before, and while it may not be traditional, it's making some damn fine whisky.

10 years of distillation -- what a milestone for Virginia Distillery Company and for American Single Malt writ large! Joshua and Jason discuss these 10 years but talk, too, about their relationship with the company that goes back 15+ years ago, before the distillery started producing their own spirits. The duo also taste through VDC's new Gingerbread Stout Cask Matured release.

Add to this, Joshua discovers that there's a difference between a "Snickerdoodle" cookie and a "Snickers" cookie, which he had been calling, in his head, a "Snickerdoodle" because it actually resembles a Snickers bar. It gets very controversial, people. The good news is, Joshua has shared his in-house "Hatton's-Snickers-Doodle" recipe below which is *delicious*. See below, and try it at home! We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Hatton's Snickers-Doodles:

• 1 cup Unsalted Butter (softened)
• 1 cup Brown Sugar (tightly packed)
• 1/2 cup Sugar
• 2 large Eggs
• 1 teaspoon Vanilla
• 2 1/4 cups Flour
• 3/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
• 1 teaspoon Salt
• 2 cups Torrone Nougut (finely chopped)
• 1 cup Milk Chocolate Chips

Method

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
• In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, and sugar until light and fluffy and pale yellow in color.
• Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla.
• Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt. Fold in chocolate chips and Torrone Nougat.
• Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges start to become a light golden color. Let cool for at least 10-15 minutes before removing from the baking sheet.
• Put a cookie in your mouth and eat it. Repeat.

Joshua and Jason welcome both Shane "Showtime" Armstrong (Master Blender, Westland Distillery) and Jason Moore (Managing Director, Westland Distillery) back to the podcast.

In this episode we find our very own Jason visiting with Shane at the Westland "Sensory Lab" going through the design, make-up, and flavors of Garryana 10yo, and then our time with Jason Moore was a chat over Zoom with us discussing the theft of over 12,000 bottles of Westland's whisky which included Garryana 10yo, as well as their "Flagship" and "Watchpost" bottlings. Add to this, and perhaps most importantly, we discuss the historic nature of this Garryana release which is Westland's first age stated whisky!

Finally, Joshua and Jason take you through their tasting notes of this seriously epic dram. Spoiler alert: Hot shit, this is good whisky.

It's always lovely having Scott Harris of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company return to the podcast. In today's episode he and Jason discuss the state of the whisky industry writ large (and the fact that Scott feels we're coming out of some difficult times), an investment opportunity in the distillery, potential expansion of the distillery, and just for funsies, Scott makes them both a couple of Toronto cocktails using the newest Catoctin Creek Maple Cask Rye.

The lovely team at Waiheke Island Distillery in New Zealand were kind enough to send Joshua and Jason their latest range of whiskies including a cask sample that shows the direction their spirit is going with some new stills the Distillery has installed. Along with the whisky samples came full information including: Barley types, Yeast types, Fermentation times, Fermentation ABV, Spirit cut points, Cask type, ...and more!

A true whisky geeks delight! Listen in as J&J taste through three cracking Single Malts from New Zealand's Waiheke Distillery as well as some of their 14 month old peated spirit!

Joshua & Jason discuss some very special Scotch whiskies being released on singlecasknation.com on Thursday, September 18: a 14yo BenRiach, 12yo Clynelish, and 8yo "Cawdor Springs". Independent Bottling tends to have a sharp focus on Scotch whiskies, specifically single malt. There are a few notable bottlers that focus solely on American Spirits (Lost Lantern and Crowded Barrel come to mind here) but there's no independent bottler that focuses solely on World Whiskies. Well, not until now.

Meet Pablo Goldbarg of Catador Itinerante, an independent bottler who does just that. He's also a long time friend of Joshua and Jason. Here's to a great conversation and a lot of laughs*

Joshua & Jason discuss the fact that India dropped its tariffs on Scotch whisky from 150% to 75% with the aim to drop them down to 40% over the next 10 years. This is a boon to the Scotch whisky industry especially during these slower times.

Also, the boys discuss a question that popped up on the internet: “What's the best age to bottle Scotch whisky at?” Sure, it’s a somewhat ridiculous, highly subjective, question but they tackle it nonetheless because not all heroes wear capes.

Man-o-Manschewitz, such a brilliant conversation between Jason and Christopher "Seabass" Sebastian of Blind Barrels!

Seabass is a friend, a longtime padcost listener, the receiver of our very first listener nickname (wethinks??), a whisky curator for Blind Barrels, and a helluva good guy. Somehow 35 minutes became 59 minutes. How did that happen (again)?

So far, 2025 has been a year of travel for both Joshua and Jason, and the type of travel that has had them separate from one another. For a couple of guys who tend to be tied to the hip, it's been a wee bit strange.

Now, we've been teasing the launch of a very big episode, a much anticipated episode, and we promise you, that will be coming soon (like, this season soon!), but for now the boys wanted to have a catch up, breathe a little, and just share some stories.

Who says there's not a lot of whisky news happening in the summer time?! The Ardgowan Distillery in Scotland has finally started running spirit and the Lochranza Distillery on Arran (aka Isle of Arran Distillery) turned 30 years old on June 29th. Both of these items are quite news worthy if'n you ask us!

Add to this, Jess shares details of her time at the Speyside Whisky School and Crisp Maltings and Joshua shares details of his 11 day tour of Scotland with some dear friends who also happen to be Nation members.

Recorded in March 2025, Joshua and Jess visit The Highlander Inn located in Craigellachie, right in the heart of Speyside to meet with Tatsuya Minagawa, the inn's proprietor. Tatsuya is a legend. This is not hyperbole. This is fact. Once you're deep enough into Scotch and Japanese whisky Tatsuya Minagawa is a name you learn because it's a name that is synonymous with the spirit.

Listen in as the Jess and Joshua dig into a bit of Tatsuya's history, the history of The Highlander, what you can expect when you visit, and what's to come for the inn's future.

It's one thing for Joshua and Jason to believe in a cask enough to bottle it but it's another thing entirely for a retailer to believe in what SCN does enough to not just agree that the whisky is great but to invest in the entire cask to sell to their customers. Today's episode highlights Single Cask Nation's US retail partners as well as a Canadian partner and the various casks released to these shops. The distilleries and cask types run the gamut. Spoiler alert: they're all delicious and priced as drinkers; these are SCN bottlings after all!

Jason drives up to the Skagit Valley to meet up with Shane "Showtime" Armstrong, Master Blender at Westland Distillery. The two walk around the warehouse tasting from a number of single casks and then head down to the Westland distillery in Seattle to spend some time in the sensory/blending room to share some of that experience with you, the listeners.

This is an ultra geeky episode that gets into the nitty-gritty of what makes a single cask a single cask and what makes a cask of whisky better suited for a blending component.
