Tasting Notes

NOSE: Rich and meaty from the outset (beef broth, brisket, ramen with buckwheat noodles, chicken stock, shiitake mushrooms, soaking wet pinewood forest) but with additional notes of charred oak, cocoa powder, and dark roast coffee.

PALATE: A lovely “old sherry” profile (ripe figs, dried dates, freshly shelled walnuts, rich oak) with oatmeal raisin cookies, coffee ice cream, baked apples, and more charred oak.

FINISH: Good length and pleasingly drying with lingering charred oak, dark fruit cake, and amaretti cookies.

Description

Ruadh Mhor is a richly peated spirit from the Glenturret Distillery. The peating level on their barley is 80ppm which is higher than every distillery on Islay, barring the Octomore spirit produced at the Bruichladdich distillery. It’s also Highland peat rather than Islay peat so it’s not coastal but vegetal in style. A highly contemplative dram!
